FORMAT COMPARISON

TXT vs VTT for Instagram Reel Transcripts

Choose TXT when you need editable plain text without timing data. Choose VTT when you need each phrase linked to its moment in the Reel. Both contain the same words; only VTT adds timestamps.

  1. 1

    TXT for reading, editing, and searching.

  2. 2

    VTT for subtitling, quoting with timestamps, and cue editing.

  3. 3

    Both downloads appear in the tool when their data is available.

TEST RECORD

What we observed in the format comparison test

Checked September 29, 2026. We submitted one 60-second Reel and downloaded both TXT and VTT outputs.

TXT file
143 words, 8 lines, 1.2 KB
VTT file
143 words, 12 cues, 2.8 KB
Word accuracy
Identical between both files
Size difference
VTT is larger because of timestamp metadata

The test confirms that TXT and VTT contain the same transcript text. The only difference is the presence of timing data in VTT. Choose based on whether your workflow needs timestamps.

ORIGINAL SAMPLES

See the same content in both formats

These samples were created for this guide. They show the same short passage in TXT and VTT.

TXT sample:

Start with the smallest task you can finish today.

Write the next action in one sentence.

Remove anything you cannot verify.

Then review the result before you share it.

VTT sample:

WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.200
Start with the smallest task you can finish today.

00:00:03.200 --> 00:00:06.100
Write the next action in one sentence.

00:00:06.100 --> 00:00:08.900
Remove anything you cannot verify.

00:00:08.900 --> 00:00:12.000
Then review the result before you share it.

The VTT sample adds a header line (WEBVTT), timing arrows, and start/end timestamps. The cue text is identical to the TXT sample. The choice is purely about whether you need the timing metadata.

CONVERTING BETWEEN TXT AND VTT

Turn one format into the other

TXT to VTT

To add timing to a plain text transcript, use an auto-alignment tool that matches the text to the audio and generates cue timestamps. Manual conversion is possible but tedious: you must listen to the Reel and write a timestamp for every line.

VTT to TXT

Strip the WEBVTT header, the timing lines, and the blank lines between cues. Keep only the cue text. Most text editors can do this with a few find-and-replace operations. The result is a plain text transcript with the same words in the same order.

BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD

A format-selection check

  • I know whether my next task needs timestamps or only text.
  • I have a tool that can open the format I choose (any editor for TXT; a text editor or subtitle tool for VTT).
  • I will keep the original download untouched and edit a working copy.
  • If I need both formats, I will download both rather than converting manually.
  • I understand that the VTT button only appears when timestamp data is available.

CLEAR ANSWERS

TXT vs VTT FAQ

Does VTT include more words than TXT?

No. Both files contain the same transcript text. VTT only adds timing metadata around each cue. The word count is identical.

Why is the VTT button sometimes missing?

The VTT download appears only when the transcription result includes timestamp data. If the tool returns text without timing, only the TXT and Copy options are available.

Can I open VTT in Microsoft Word?

Yes, but Word will display the timestamps as plain text. For a cleaner view, use a dedicated subtitle editor or convert to TXT first. Word is not designed for timed text editing.

Which format is better for translation?

VTT is better because it preserves timing. You can translate each cue and keep the original timestamps, making it easy to create subtitles in the new language. TXT loses timing, so you would need to re-align the translated text.
