QUOTE EXTRACTION WORKFLOW
How to Extract Quotes from an Instagram Reel Transcript
You can extract quotes from an Instagram Reel transcript by marking every passage you intend to use, replaying each marked section at half speed to confirm the exact wording, and recording the start timestamp so the quote can be traced back to its source moment.
- 1
Generate the transcript and read for quotable passages.
- 2
Mark each intended quote with its start timestamp.
- 3
Replay at half speed and verify every word.
TEST RECORD
What we observed in the quote-extraction test
Checked September 29, 2026. We tested one 60-second motivational Reel and marked three passages as potential quotes.
- Quote 1 (opening)
- Transcript matched audio on first replay
- Quote 2 (mid-Reel)
- One word differed: "always" vs. "almost" — caught at half speed
- Quote 3 (closing)
- Speaker self-corrected; transcript captured both versions
- Common issue
- Model smoothed informal speech into formal wording
The test confirms that even apparently accurate transcripts need audio verification before quotation. The speech model often "normalizes" speech, which can change the speaker's intended emphasis or meaning.
ORIGINAL QUOTE-VERIFICATION WORKSHEET
Verify every quote before you use it
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Quote text | The exact words you plan to publish. | Any deviation from the audio is a misquotation. |
| Source Reel | The Instagram URL or your file name. | Readers and editors need to find the original. |
| Start timestamp | The time in the Reel where the quote begins. | Allows anyone to replay and verify the quote. |
| End timestamp | The time where the quote ends. | Defines the boundaries of the quoted material. |
| Speaker | Who said the words. | Required for attribution. |
| Context note | What was happening before and after. | Prevents out-of-context quotation. |
| Verification method | Normal speed, half speed, or headphones. | Documents how you confirmed accuracy. |
TIMESTAMP METHOD
Record the exact moment for every quote
1. Generate the transcript with timestamps
Use the VTT output when available. Each cue includes a start time and end time. Even if you only need the text, the timestamps give you precise locator data for verification.
2. Read and mark quotable passages
As you read the transcript, highlight or copy any passage you might want to quote. Do not verify yet — just collect candidates.
3. Replay each candidate at its timestamp
For each marked passage, navigate to the start timestamp in the Reel. Play the segment at half speed with headphones. Compare the audio word for word to the transcript. If they differ, correct the transcript before quoting.
4. Fill out the verification worksheet
Record the verified quote text, timestamps, speaker, and context. Keep this worksheet with your draft. It is your audit trail if the quote is ever challenged.
BEFORE YOU PUBLISH
A quote-extraction handoff check
- Every published quote was replayed and verified word for word.
- Each quote has a start timestamp that points to the source moment.
- The speaker is correctly attributed.
- The quote is not taken out of context — the surrounding meaning is preserved.
- Any omissions within the quote are marked with ellipsis, not silently deleted.
CLEAR ANSWERS
Quote extraction FAQ
Can I quote from a Reel without the creator's permission?
Short quotations for commentary, criticism, or news reporting may fall under fair use in some jurisdictions, but the rules vary. For commercial use or extensive quotation, seek permission from the creator. Always attribute the quote correctly.
Should I include timestamps in the published article?
Include them if your publication style supports it. Timestamps are especially valuable for fact-checkers, editors, and readers who want to hear the original context. At minimum, keep them in your internal notes.
What if the transcript and audio disagree?
The audio is the source of truth. Correct the transcript to match the audio before quoting. If you cannot resolve the discrepancy after multiple replays, mark the quote as uncertain or choose a different passage.
Can I paraphrase instead of quoting verbatim?
Yes, but a paraphrase must not distort the speaker's meaning. Verify your paraphrase against the audio to ensure accuracy. If the exact wording matters for the impact or credibility of the statement, use a direct quote instead.
